GEISINGER PEDIATRIC RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Our Educational Platform
Geisinger's Pediatric Residency Program is part of a large health system that is responsible for maintaining the health of several million people in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Being part of such a large organization has its advantages. Our program is fortunate to be able to utilize all the resources within the Geisinger Health System to educate our residents. Our residents are welcome in every venue where care is delivered, research is conducted, students are educated, or where Geisinger physicians play a role in community affairs. This provides a wonderful opportunity for our residents to engage in all aspects of healthcare and be mentored by individuals who are truly making a difference in the lives of our region's children.
DIDACTICS
Daily Formal Learning Opportunities
We take didactic learning seriously at Geisinger. Residency is a time to engage in formal learning opportunities and ask questions. We believe that this opportunity should exist every day, not just for a handful of hours once per week. Our program protects the time for residents to gather every day, or even several times daily, to learn directly from faculty who are committed to their education.
ROTATIONS
Hands-On Learning in Multiple Settings
We are fortunate to be the only provider of children's healthcare for our rural part of Pennsylvania. This means that children from all over the northern half of the Commonwealth come to Geisinger for their medical problems. Our residents train in clinics that provide a broad range of specialty care, the largest inpatient pediatric unit in the region, the only Level-4 NICU and PICU in the area, an active newborn nursery on the main campus as well as a large primary care practice that manages over 14,000 children
UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING
Creative Ways to Educate Our Residents
Pediatricians provide care and expertise in many locations, not just clinics and hospital settings. Our program stresses the importance of these activities in our training. To help our residents to recognize their future civic responsibilities as a physician and look for ways to engage their community, our residency has developed several unique learning opportunities. As our residents will attest, these are some of the most meaningful experiences of their training.
RESIDENT WELLNESS
Residency Does Not Have to be So Stressful
Whatever you have heard, residency does not have to be a period of personal struggle. Sure, it can be tiring and emotionally exhausting at times, but programs should offer residents opportunities to get away from the stress and take care of themselves. Our program understands that residents are first and foremost learners and are not supposed to be used as labor to satisfy the clinical needs of the department. Residents need dedicated time to learn and care for themselves. We try very hard to ensure that this balance is always maintained, caring equally for our residents' academic as well as personal needs.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Personalized Support for Career Success
Its never too early to begin working on setting your career goals and making a plan to get you there. We take this aspect of resident education very seriously. We offer residents many avenues to gain the skills to be successful physicians as well as fulfill their personal aspirations as health providers, team members, educators and community leaders. Our program ensures that all residents have excellent formal mentorship, career guidance, instruction in educational methods, and opportunity to engage in both medical and community related projects. We want all of our residents to reach their highest potential, and develop the skills to enable them to be the next generation of medical and community leaders.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Residents Deserve Support
Geisinger cares about its resident staff. We are fortunate that Danville has a very low cost of living compared with many other places where pediatric residency programs are located. None the less, we realize that many of our residents are balancing the expenses of a family, cost of living or student loans. Geisinger's financial success and sound approach to business permits the institution to be very generous with its house staff. The organization has developed a very competitive salary and benefits program that greatly reduces residents' financial worries, allowing them to concentrate more fully on their education.
