ABOUT US
Geisinger's Pediatric Residency Program has been educating new physicians in pediatric health since the 1940's. Our program is located at The Janet Weis Children's Hospital and utilizes all aspects of the Geisinger Health System to develop skillful and compassionate pediatricians who advance to meaningful and successful careers. Our program is highly respected on a national level for its excellent board pass rate, innovative approach to education and ability to consistently attract outstanding students.
OUR CURRICULUM
Although Geisinger is a large health system that spans across northeastern and central Pennsylvania, the entire program can be completed at our central hub location with no need to travel to distant hospitals. All residents are free to develop a curriculum that is specially designed to meet their unique interests and anticipated needs. With twelve free electives built into the course of study there is no need for developing separate tracks of education - every resident creates their own track. The addition of specialized opportunities in global health, camp medicine, and advocacy sets our program apart from the rest.
OUR COMMUNITY
Danville is a welcoming and friendly community nestled in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. Our residents enjoy a rather unique lifestyle where high-tech, cutting edge medicine meets the comfort and peace found in our rural location. Living in Danville has its perks: a low cost of living, short commute times to work, virtually no crime, quick access to outdoor recreation and neighbors who really appreciate the work of our physicians. The Susquehanna Valley is rich with many well known cultural, academic, environmental and entertainment venues for residents to enjoy during their time with us.
OUR INTERVIEW PROCESS
This year, in keeping with recommendations from the AAMC, all of our interviews will be done virtually. We realize that this is not the optimal way to learn about residency programs and prioritize your rank list. Our program has worked very hard to provide you with new streams for information about our health system, educational platform, faculty and residents as well as our Danville community. The interview day structure, although virtual, has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to present your excellent qualifications as well as to permit us to show you why a residency education at Gesinger is a great way to begin your future in pediatrics.

RESIDENCY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Geisinger is committed to treating everyone fairly. To this end, several programs have been initiated to promote a diverse workforce within our hospital staff and medical education community. This includes our many residency programs.
From a system standpoint, Geisinger has appointed a formal director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and established a well-supported framework with a mission to promote an inclusive working environment, diversified talent, engagement with our local communities, and further enhancements for programs to promote health equity for our patients. As part of this mission, the health system has implemented a DEI Council to steward these initiatives. This council includes a wide variety of individuals from many operational areas, each bringing their unique talents and leadership skills to promote these efforts. Within our educational framework, Geisinger has recently announced the appointment of Valencia P. Walker, MD, MPH as the Vice Dean for Health Equity and Inclusion at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Our learning institutions are committed to fostering a supportive educational environment for all faculty, staff, and learners regardless of age, gender, national origin, religion, race, physical, mental, emotional ability, dis(ability) or sexual orientation. As part of this mission, the Office Graduate Medical Education has established a Resident DEI Council that is comprised of residents from all the institution’s residency programs. All residents are welcome to participate. Currently, a number of Pediatric and Med/Peds residents hold leadership positions in this very important committee.
Geisinger wants every one of our residents to feel welcome and respected. We try to create a place where everyone can offer their unique viewpoints and develop into an outstanding pediatrician, ready to take on the challenges that children face in our diverse communities.
